Frost devastates crops in Arcadia, Greece

A severe frost on 4 May destroyed crops across Arcadia and other parts of the Peloponnese, wiping out fruit trees, vineyards, and vegetable fields. ELGA assessment teams and regional officials, including the Peloponnese governor’s deputy and the Arcadia agricultural cooperative president, visited the damaged sites to document losses and accelerate compensation for farmers.

Local politicians called for immediate financial aid and for reforms such as 100 % compensation, faster damage assessment procedures, and the adoption of modern frost‑protection technologies (wind machines, artificial rain, biomass burners) used abroad. They also urged a revision of ELGA regulations to cover total losses without restrictions.

The event threatens the livelihood of many producers in Arcadia, Corinthia and Messinia, prompting urgent discussion at the Peloponnese Regional Council and calls for a comprehensive strategy to increase the primary sector’s resilience to climate extremes.
