FSSAI flags Nestlé dairy product as unsafe at The Lalit hotel
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has taken enforcement action against several food businesses following laboratory analyses that identified unsafe and substandard products.
A sample of Nestlé Low Fat Dairy Whitener, collected from Bharat Hotels Ltd (The Lalit) in New Delhi, was declared ‘unsafe and substandard’ under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. Consequently, the FSSAI directed the hotel operator to immediately prohibit the sale of the product. Nestlé India has contested these findings, asserting that the product is safe and complies with all regulations. The company argued that the laboratory analysis measured total phosphorus without distinguishing between naturally occurring phosphorus in milk and added phosphorus additives.
In separate actions, the FSSAI suspended the licenses of Shivam Agro and TCF Chocolates and Gifts Pvt. Ltd. due to serious hygiene and sanitation deficiencies. Inspections at Shivam Agro revealed issues including pest infestations, improper storage, and the use of corroded equipment. The action against TCF Chocolates followed a consumer complaint regarding food ordered through an e-commerce platform.
