Food safety authorities in India have initiated widespread enforcement actions targeting hygiene violations and substandard products across multiple states. Initial inspections by the FSSAI and regional agencies uncovered significant lapses in major urban centers. In Maharashtra, authorities suspended licenses for establishments in Mumbai and Nagpur due to pest activity and improper storage, while a milk adulteration racket in Navi Mumbai led to the destruction of over 4,700 litres of suspect dairy. In Delhi and Bengaluru, inspections at high-end hotels and clubs revealed expired food and cockroach infestations. Other regional actions included the seizure of 15 tonnes of food in Hyderabad and the discovery of expired food packets in Ahmedabad. Regulatory focus has expanded to specific product standards and intensified enforcement. The FSSAI prohibited the sale of certain compounded hing brands, such as those from Everest Food Products Private Limited and Laljee Godhoo and Company (LG Brand Unit), after laboratory tests showed they failed to meet minimum alcohol soluble extract requirements and contained excessive starch. In Surat, officials destroyed moldy sweets and spoiled nuts following the discovery of white fungus on products. In Kolkata, a week-long inspection drive by the Kolkata Municipal Corporation resulted in the suspension of food licenses for 40 establishments, including restaurants and sweetmeat shops, due to rotten food, fungal growth, and pest infestations. During this drive, 1,224 kg of non-conforming food was destroyed. Regulatory scrutiny has recently expanded to include fire safety and broader establishment audits. Following a fatal fire at the Shikha Inn in Kolkata, authorities conducted an audit of 960 establishments, recommending the closure of 919 guest houses and hotels that failed to meet fire safety regulations.
