Fuel price surges in France spark concerns for rural communities
Fuel prices in France have reached significant highs, with diesel averaging over 2.40 euros per liter and some gasoline prices approaching 3 euros per liter. Costs are particularly high at highway service stations due to specific contracts and captive customer bases; for instance, prices at certain locations on the A11 motorway have reached nearly 2.93 euros per liter.
The Association des maires ruraux de France (AMRF) has raised alarms regarding the impact on rural populations. In these areas, 89% of residents report a dependency on cars for daily life, and 90% of kilometers traveled in rural spaces are by vehicle. The sustained high cost of fuel is forcing residents to forgo medical care, professional travel, and family connections.
Data from Insee indicates that one in four rural workers travels at least 24 kilometers to reach their workplace, often resulting in a 50-kilometer daily round trip. Local officials fear that the combination of long commuting distances and high fuel costs is creating a sense of territorial injustice and a growing divide between rural and urban areas.
