Fuel prices in Greece remain high during August holidays

Fuel prices in Greece remain high during the August holiday season, despite a decrease in international crude oil prices. According to data from the Independent Authority for Public Revenue (August 5, 2026), the national average for 95-octane unleaded gasoline is €2.014 per liter, while diesel stands at €2.052 per liter.

There is significant regional disparity in costs. In Attica and Thessaloniki, unleaded gasoline is priced slightly below the €2 threshold, at approximately €1.988 and €1.989 respectively. However, island destinations face much higher rates; in the Cyclades, unleaded gasoline reaches €2.272 per liter and diesel reaches €2.282. Other high-cost areas include the Dodecanese and the Ionian islands.

Maria Zanga, President of the Association of Petrol Stations of Attica, explained the delay in price reductions at the pump by noting that while Brent crude prices are falling, stations supply refined products rather than raw crude. She noted that since the Russia-Ukraine war, refined products have remained expensive, causing a lag between global crude price drops and local retail adjustments.
