Fuel prices in major Indian cities remain stable on October 20

Fuel prices for petrol and diesel remained largely unchanged across major Indian cities on October 20, 2026. In Chennai, petrol is priced at Rs 107.77 per litre and diesel at Rs 99.55 per litre. In New Delhi, petrol costs Rs 102.12 and diesel Rs 95.20, while Mumbai reports petrol at Rs 111.18 and diesel at Rs 97.83.

Retail fuel prices in India are revised daily at 6 am under a dynamic pricing system. Variations between cities are primarily driven by state-level taxes, such as Value Added Tax (VAT), transportation costs, and dealer commissions, as fuel remains outside the Goods and Services Tax (GST) regime.

Earlier price fluctuations were influenced by surging global crude oil prices following geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz. While state-run retailers previously delayed passing on higher input costs to shield consumers from inflation, cumulative increases were observed in May.
