Indian fuel price stability
Overview
Fuel prices for petrol, diesel, and CNG have maintained stability across major Indian cities through early September 2026. Oil marketing companies (OMCs) and natural gas distributors have kept rates consistent, following a period of volatility where cumulative increases reached nearly Rs 7.5 per litre since mid-May.
As of September 5, 2026, retail petrol and diesel prices remained unchanged. While regional variations persist due to state-specific taxes and Value Added Tax (VAT), specific rates include petrol at ₹102.12 per litre in New Delhi and approximately ₹115.69 to ₹115.71 per litre in Hyderabad. Diesel prices reached roughly ₹104.40 per litre in Thiruvananthapuram.
This domestic stability persists despite rising international crude oil costs. Brent crude has moved closer to the $100 per barrel mark, and West Texas Intermediate (WTI) has also seen increases. Market analysts note that while global volatility—driven by Middle East tensions and concerns regarding the Strait of Hormuz—poses a risk to domestic costs, retail prices have not yet reflected these upward trends, offering temporary relief to consumers.
