Romania fuel prices fluctuate amid expiring diesel tax reduction

Fuel prices in Romania are experiencing fluctuations, with diesel prices nearing the 11 lei per liter threshold. While some major networks in Bucharest recently reduced diesel prices to approximately 10.86 lei per liter, national minimum prices for diesel have seen increases in several regions.

Standard gasoline prices remain relatively stable in major cities like Bucharest, Iași, and Constanța at around 10.11 lei per liter, while Timișoara offers lower rates at 10.09 lei. Over the last month, the average price of gasoline has risen by 4.5%, and diesel has increased by 7.7%.

A critical factor for consumers is the temporary 25% reduction in the diesel excise tax, which is currently set to remain in effect until October 15, 2026. The Ministry of Finance re-evaluates this measure bi-weekly based on international market trends. If the reduction is not extended, diesel prices could rise by approximately 85 bani per liter.

Looking ahead, analysts warn of sustained high costs. Experts citing Goldman Sachs suggest that diesel prices could remain elevated through 2027 due to global refining capacity constraints and low inventory levels.
