Hungary fuel prices rise as diesel hits four-year high

Fuel prices in Hungary have seen a significant rise, with diesel reaching a four-year high. As of early September 2026, average prices for diesel reached 697 HUF per liter, while 95-octane gasoline averaged between 617 and 622 HUF per liter.

Economic Minister István Kapitány stated that the government is working on targeted support for motorists to mitigate the impact of rising global market prices. Officials noted that while prices remain relatively lower than in some neighboring countries, there are concerns regarding fuel tourism and potential supply shortages if prices are artificially suppressed through price caps.

Global factors, including geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and conflicts involving the US and Iran, are contributing to higher crude oil costs. Additionally, domestic logistics have been impacted by drought conditions affecting the Danube river levels.

Separately, inflation data from the Central Statistical Office shows a 1.3 percent year-on-year increase in consumer prices for August. Looking ahead to 2027, highway vignette prices are expected to see a moderate increase based on these inflation trends.
