Hungary fuel price volatility and energy security updates
Overview
The Hungarian fuel market continues to face volatility driven by structural diesel shortages and geopolitical instability. Experts warn that Europe has entered a period of structural diesel shortages, with prices experiencing a significant divergence where diesel costs 60 to 80 HUF more per liter than 95-octane gasoline. By early September 2026, average costs rose significantly, with 95-octane gasoline reaching approximately 617 to 622 HUF per liter and diesel reaching 697 HUF per liter.
In response, the Hungarian government implemented a targeted diesel compensation scheme to assist approximately one million motorists. Prime Minister Péter Magyar stated that eligible owners of diesel passenger cars with a maximum output of 150 horsepower can receive a total of 20,000 HUF through December, distributed in monthly installments starting in October. While energy company MOL supported this targeted approach to avoid shortages a return to protected pricing might ‘trigger,’ the decision drew criticism. Economist Viktor Zsiday argued the subsidy is neither socially nor economically justifiable, and transport organizations like the MFFE warned that excluding professional hauliers could lead to business closures and weakened supply chain security.
Adding to the political tension, Fidesz president Viktor Orbán has proposed reinstating a protected price system to mitigate rising costs. During the Kötcse picnic on September 14, 2026, Orbán reiterated his suggestion that a protected pricing system could be reinstated using existing budget funds. He also drew controversy by labeling the National Asset Recovery Agency (NVVH) as an ‘ÁVH-style’ institution, suggesting that if Fidesz returns to power, agency employees must face legal and financial accountability. Prime Minister Magyar condemned these remarks as ‘official violence against public officials,’ while NVVH head Anna Unger stated the agency would take legal action to protect employees from intimidation.
