Fuel prices rise in Hungary as gasoline exceeds 600 HUF

Fuel prices in Hungary have seen a significant increase, with average costs for 95-octane gasoline rising to 609 HUF per liter and diesel reaching 688 HUF per liter. This upward trend follows a period in August where Hungarian fuel prices were notably lower than those in neighboring countries such as Austria, Czechia, and Romania.

The price hike is driven by rising international crude oil prices, which have climbed from approximately 83 USD to over 90 USD per barrel, alongside a weakening forint. Additionally, the price gap between gasoline and diesel has widened to 79 HUF, compared to a 20 HUF difference under previous government protections.

Ottó Grád, Secretary General of the Hungarian Mineral Oil Association, noted that the higher cost of diesel is a broader European trend. While refineries can still meet gasoline demand, diesel shortages persist. The shift away from Russian imports toward more expensive supplies from the United States and South America, coupled with disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, has further pressured diesel availability and pricing.
