Romania fuel prices rise as diesel exceeds 10.50 lei per liter

Fuel prices in Romania have seen significant increases, with diesel exceeding 10.50 lei per liter and gasoline approaching the 10 lei mark. National averages for diesel have risen approximately 14.2% since late June. In major cities like Bucharest, Cluj-Napoca, and Timișoara, prices remain high, with diesel ranging between 10.35 and 10.72 lei per liter depending on the station.

According to data from the National Institute of Statistics (INS), Romania's annual inflation rate fell to 6.17% in August 2026, down from 8.2% in July. However, this decline is attributed to a positive base effect. While the headline inflation rate has slowed, the cost of essential services and goods remains high; specifically, rents increased by 39.7% and fuels saw double-digit annual growth, with diesel up 34.61% and gasoline up 25.49% compared to August 2025.

Political figures have criticized the government's handling of the situation. PSD Deputy and former Energy Minister Bogdan Ivan called the current fuel prices “historic” and demanded immediate state intervention, including increased controls by ANAF and the Competition Council. Former Labor Minister Marius Budăi also criticized the administration, arguing that the reported drop in inflation does not reflect the actual increased cost of living for citizens.
