Fuel prices rise in Spain and France amid supply concerns

Fuel prices are rising across Europe, with gasoline and diesel in Spain reaching approximately 2 euros per liter. This surge follows eleven consecutive weeks of price increases for gasoline, driven in part by Brent crude oil trading near the 100-dollar mark amid international tensions in the Middle East.

Despite the price hikes, Spain appears relatively resilient to supply shortages. The country operates eight refineries, five of which are owned by Repsol, and maintains low dependency on Middle Eastern oil, which accounts for only 5.5% of its supply. Additionally, Spain relies minimally on imported refined products, with diesel imports representing 23.3% of consumption in the first seven months of 2026.

In France, high prices have led to localized congestion. Near Strasbourg, a TotalEnergies station in Schiltigheim experiences heavy crowds whenever it is replenished due to its capped prices of 1.99 euros per liter for gasoline and 2.25 euros per liter for diesel. The resulting long queues have caused traffic disruptions, sometimes forcing motorists to use tramway tracks to bypass the lines.
