Spain implements energy price caps to combat rising inflation

The Spanish government is implementing a new anti-crisis package to mitigate rising energy costs driven by geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. To protect households, the Council of Ministers will limit the increase of the regulated natural gas tariff (TUR) to 15%, preventing a potential rise of over 45%. Additionally, the price of butane bottles will be capped at 19.55 euros until June 2027.

Inflation in Spain reached 4.9% in September, the highest level since February 2023, largely due to rising fuel and lubricant costs. To combat this, the government plans to extend agricultural diesel subsidies, likely until December 31. While fuel tax discounts for gasoline and diesel are set to expire, the government is considering measures to prevent drastic price hikes.

Consumer organizations like OCU warn that without these interventions, the gas bill could increase household expenses by an average of 310 euros annually. Meanwhile, wholesale electricity prices saw a significant increase, reaching 164.98 euros per megawatt hour on September 30.
