Mexico proposes Digital Economy Law to reduce cash usage
The Mexican government has introduced the Digital Economy Law to promote electronic payments and gradually reduce cash usage. President Claudia Sheinbaum clarified that the law does not prohibit cash but aims to increase digital transactions for security, transparency, and tax collection purposes.
Initial implementation will target strategic sectors, specifically gas stations and highway toll booths. The strategy seeks to reduce cash transactions for operations under 500 pesos by 50% by 2027. The initiative leverages existing infrastructure, such as the SPEI and CoDi systems developed by the Bank of Mexico, which allow for immediate, commission-free transfers via mobile devices.
Additional measures include facilitating remote bank account openings for small businesses using digital identification like the digital CURP. The law also mandates that all levels of government adopt electronic payment methods for public services and procedures. The Digital Transformation Agency reported that over 4,000 government procedures have been simplified in the last two years as part of this broader modernization effort.
