Fuel shortages hit Shillong as transport union suspends supplies from Assam

The North-East Petroleum Mazdoor Union (NEPMU) has suspended the transportation of petrol, diesel, and LPG from Assam to Meghalaya. The union cited security concerns for Assam-registered vehicles following incidents of theft on August 19.

The disruption has led to widespread fuel shortages and panic buying in Shillong. Several petrol pumps in areas such as Nongmensong, Mawlai-Mawiong, and near the Fire Bridge have closed or implemented strict rationing, with some stations limiting sales to specific amounts per customer to manage remaining reserves.

The situation has raised concerns regarding Meghalaya’s energy security and its heavy reliance on fuel supplies transported through neighboring Assam. While the region possesses petroleum resources and refining infrastructure through entities like ONGC and Numaligarh Refinery Limited, the current logistical disruption highlights vulnerabilities in the state’s fuel supply chain.
