Assam-Meghalaya border taxi and fuel standoff

A standoff between taxi operators from Assam and Meghalaya has caused significant economic disruption along their shared border. The conflict escalated following a Khasi Students’ Union rally on August 19, leading to retaliatory blockades at Jorabat and Lad Umroi. Meghalaya-based drivers blocked Assam-registered vehicles, alleging that out-of-state operators were unfairly capturing the local tourism market. This unrest resulted in massive cancellations for hotels and homestays in areas like Shillong and Sohra.

The situation worsened as the North-East Petroleum Mazdoor Union (NEPMU) suspended the transportation of petrol, diesel, and LPG from Assam to Meghalaya. The union cited security concerns for Assam-registered vehicles following theft incidents on August 19. This suspension triggered widespread fuel shortages and panic buying in Shillong, forcing several petrol pumps to close or implement strict rationing. The disruption has highlighted Meghalaya’s logistical vulnerabilities regarding its reliance on fuel supplies transported through Assam.
