Fukuoka authorities warn of drunk driving risks following local arrest

Authorities in Fukuoka Prefecture are highlighting the dangers of drunk driving, specifically regarding bicycles and hangover driving. Under revised road traffic laws, operating a bicycle while under the influence is subject to severe penalties, including up to three years of imprisonment or fines up to 500,000 yen.

In a recent incident in Yanagawa City, a 65-year-old woman was arrested for driving a light vehicle while intoxicated. Police reported that her breath alcohol level was more than twice the legal limit. The suspect admitted to consuming a 500ml canned chu-hi and 50ml of sour concentrate at home earlier that morning.

Experts warn that alcohol metabolism can be slower than expected, particularly during sleep, which can lead to unintentional hangover driving. To raise awareness, local authorities in Fukuoka City provide specialized goggles that simulate impaired vision to demonstrate the physical risks of intoxication.
