Ongoing alcohol-related traffic enforcement in Japan

Overview

In late July and early August 2026, Japanese authorities conducted a series of alcohol-related traffic enforcement actions across multiple prefectures.

In mid-July, disciplinary actions followed arrests in Saga and Akita. Saga University suspended a 40-year-old section chief for one month after he was caught riding a bicycle with breath-alcohol levels approximately 2.4 times the legal limit. Separately, the Akita Northern Brex rugby team terminated the contract of a 29-year-old player, originally from Fiji, following an alcohol-impaired driving incident on July 13.

On July 30, police in Ishikawa arrested a 45-year-old sake brewery president who collided with another vehicle in Hakusan city while driving under the influence. In Fukuoka, a resident of Kawahara town was also detained for suspected intoxicated driving.

On August 1, two incidents were reported: in Fukuoka, a 15-year-old high school student was arrested for riding a helmet-less motorbike while intoxicated, and in Wakayama, a 36-year-old man was detained for allegedly stealing a truck and driving it while under the influence, causing property damage by hitting a utility pole.

By mid-August, enforcement continued with a 49-year-old care worker arrested in Tagawa City, Fukuoka, after a breathalyzer revealed an alcohol concentration of 0.88 mg/L. In Ebetsu, Hokkaido, a 17-year-old high school student was arrested for driving a motorized bicycle while intoxicated after colliding with a passenger car at an intersection.

On August 21, a 65-year-old woman was arrested in Yanagawa City, Fukuoka, for driving a light vehicle while intoxicated, with breath alcohol levels reported at more than twice the legal limit. In response to such incidents, Fukuoka authorities have highlighted the risks of hangover driving and the severe penalties for operating bicycles under the influence.
