Fukuoka assembly scandal leads to third‑party committee after post‑earthquake beer party
A series of allegations of illicit cash transfers have engulfed the Fukuoka Prefectural Assembly. Assembly member Hideyuki Eto claimed he gave more than ¥8 million to Liberal Democratic Party leader Tsuneshō Matsuo during his bid for the vice‑speaker post, and said Matsuo pressured him by phone. Matsuo acknowledged the call but denied any coercion.
The controversy intensified after a political‑fund‑raising "beer party" was held in a hotel in Fukuoka City hours after the Kumamoto earthquake, drawing 500‑600 attendees and charging ¥15,000 per person. The party, organized by Matsuo, was criticised as insensitive and led to his resignation as party head in the assembly.
Kitakyushu Mayor Kazuhisa Takei, who sits on the prefectural council, called for a structural review of the alleged practices, urging that responsibility not be placed on individuals alone. In response, Assembly Speaker Yūgo Kuranai, previously opposed to an external inquiry, announced support for establishing a third‑party committee to investigate the money‑for‑favor claims.
The unfolding scandal has prompted calls for broader reforms of the assembly’s ethics rules and heightened public scrutiny of political conduct in the wake of the disaster.
