Fukuoka Prefectural Assembly faces corruption and fund misuse allegations

The Fukuoka Prefectural Assembly is facing intense scrutiny over allegations of systemic corruption and the misuse of public funds. Reports indicate that the assembly spent 360 million yen on overseas inspections over a four-year period, a figure significantly higher than other regional assemblies. One specific trip to Hawaii reportedly cost approximately 3 million yen per person for four assembly members.

In addition to travel expenses, allegations of illicit money exchanges have surfaced. Vice Chairman Isao Nakao recently resigned following accusations regarding the handling of funds. Assembly member Genaki Yoshimatsu has also raised concerns regarding large sums of money associated with celebratory events for the assembly chair.

Further concerns have been raised regarding the independence of the assembly. Allegations suggest that the prefectural administration has been drafting questions for assembly members, potentially undermining the oversight role of the legislature. During a televised discussion, assembly member Taihaku Hayashi, a former secretary to Chairman Isao Kurauchi, addressed the allegations, stating that if such practices are customary, they must be abolished by the younger generation of lawmakers.
