Fukuoka Prefectural Assembly prepares for speaker election amid LDP decline
The Fukuoka Prefectural Assembly is preparing for a speaker election during its September regular session following the resignation of former speaker Kurauchi. The election marks a potential shift in power, as the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), which has long held a monopoly on the position, faces unprecedented political headwinds.
The LDP's influence has diminished following the resignation of both the former speaker and deputy speaker, reducing the faction to 37 members. The LDP has proposed Michito Oshima as its candidate. Conversely, Komeito has announced Masahiko Shinkai as its candidate, with various other factions and independent members engaging in negotiations to secure a majority.
In addition to the leadership race, there are growing calls from within the assembly for the former speaker to provide a formal explanation to the public regarding the circumstances of his resignation.
