Fukuoka Prefecture Assembly Launches External Inquiry into Alleged ¥20 Million Cash Deal

The Fukuoka Prefecture Assembly announced an external, expert‑led interview of all its members to determine whether a cash transaction occurred in connection with the election of its chair and vice‑chair. Former assembly chair Yoshimatsu Genaki alleges he handed approximately ¥20 million to former deputy chair Nakao Masayuki, who was then the Liberal Democratic Party’s prefectural executive, in exchange for the senior posts. Assembly speaker Yutaka Kuranai said the investigation will assess any evidence of money‑for‑position exchanges.

Fukuoka Governor Seitaro Hattori responded, urging a swift clarification of the facts and stating that the scandal threatens the dignity of the assembly and the prefecture's reputation. He emphasized the public’s right to know the truth.
