Fukuoka Prefecture designated as Japan’s GX Strategic Region

Fukuoka Prefecture, specifically the areas of Kitakyushu, Nogata, and Karatsu, has been officially designated as a ‘GX Strategic Region’ (Data Center Aggregation Type) by the Japanese government. This designation follows a selection process aimed at promoting the decentralized location of data centers in regions with abundant decarbonized power sources.

The initiative seeks to strengthen digital infrastructure, promote Green Transformation (GX), and foster new industrial clusters through the integration of power and communication infrastructure. As a designated region, the area will receive national financial support to facilitate the development of electricity, telecommunications, and industrial water infrastructure, as well as measures to support AI development, demonstration, and implementation.

Over the next ten years leading up to 2036, the prefecture plans to develop 81 hectares of suitable land, including the Nogata and Karatsu Industrial Park. The goal is to achieve a power supply exceeding 1 gigawatt to attract domestic and international data center operators and establish a major hub for GX-related industries.
