Fukushima Bear Escapes Factory and Attacks People During Hunt

A wild bear that had attacked four people in two factories in Fukushima Prefecture fled into a nearby building, where it reportedly opened a window and turned on a faucet to drink. City officials, led by Mayor Juki Baba, launched an extensive search using traps, tranquiliser shots, drones and other officers, but police avoided firearms because of flammable materials inside the factory.

The incident follows a recent surge in bear sightings near Japanese settlements, with 13 victims reported nationwide last year. Schools in the city were temporarily closed during the search and reopened after additional security measures were installed. The mayor said the bear was in a disturbed state, making the operation particularly challenging, and pledged continued cooperation with authorities to ensure public safety.
