Funchal political parties criticize municipal management on city anniversary
During the solemn session marking the 518th anniversary of Funchal's elevation to city status, local political parties raised significant criticisms regarding the city's management and social challenges.
PPM Madeira issued a statement through coordinator Paulo Brito, criticizing the municipal executive for a lack of effective responses to urban issues. The party highlighted the housing crisis, arguing that luxury real estate developments have made the city unaffordable for local residents. They also called for a coordinated response between the Municipal Chamber, the Regional Government, and Social Security to address the rising number of homeless individuals.
Similarly, the JPP, represented by Isabel Santos, accused the PSD/CDS majority in the Municipal Chamber of rejecting all 13 of its recent proposals. Santos emphasized that the city must grow without displacing its own citizens. Key concerns raised by the JPP included the high cost of living, mobility, urban cleanliness, and the need for better maintenance of public spaces and coastal ecosystems beyond the city center.
