Mutua Madrileña allocates €2.3 million to 21 new Spanish medical research projects

The Fundación Mutua Madrileña announced the award of its XXIII Ayudas a la Investigación Médica, providing €2.3 million to 21 new research projects that will be carried out in hospitals across Spain. The funding brings the foundation’s total investment in medical research to roughly €75 million. Projects span organ transplantation, mental‑health care for children and adolescents, rare paediatric diseases, severe trauma injuries and oncology, with a special focus on breast‑cancer studies.

Two of the 21 projects are collaborative, involving teams from at least four autonomous communities. One collaborative study, RISCATEA, brings together eight Spanish centres to examine suicide risk among adolescents and young adults on the autism spectrum. In Andalusia, five of the awarded projects – based in Seville, Córdoba and Granada – will receive more than €550 000 and address suicide‑prevention in youth, dual‑transplant tolerance, lung‑preservation biobanking and rare‑disease genomics.

Ignacio Garralda, president of Grupo Mutua and the foundation, highlighted the long‑term commitment to research excellence and a growing emphasis on the humanisation of health care. The foundation also supports a breast‑cancer study led by Adeslas, the health‑insurance arm of the Grupo Mutua.
