Fundación Mapfre launches three new art exhibitions in Madrid
Fundación Mapfre has launched three new exhibitions in Madrid, focusing on Pre-Raphaelitism, the avant-garde, and the work of American photographer Minor White. The exhibitions are scheduled to run from September 24 until January 10.
One major exhibition, ‘Pre-Raphaelitism: Female Itineraries (1850-1914)’, curated by Pamela Gerrish Nunn, seeks to re-examine the movement by highlighting the contributions of women artists. Historically, the Pre-Raphaelite movement was often framed as a male-dominated group, with women relegated to the roles of muses. This exhibition aims to showcase how female creators used art as a tool for intellectual freedom and social critique.
Another exhibition, ‘The Other Shore of the Avant-Garde’, uses Hans Prinzhorn’s 1922 book ‘Expressions of Madness’ as a starting point, exploring works from the collection of psychiatric patients at Heidelberg University Hospital. Additionally, the foundation is hosting a comprehensive European retrospective of Minor White’s photography, organized chronologically to highlight his narrative sequences involving nature, landscapes, and portraits.
