Fundación Mapfre art exhibitions in Madrid
Overview
Fundación Mapfre in Madrid has launched a series of art exhibitions scheduled to run from September 24 through January 10. These include a study of Pre-Raphaelitism focusing on female artists, a retrospective of American photographer Minor White, and an exploration of the avant-garde.
The exhibition titled ‘The Other Shore of the Avant-Garde’ examines the legacy of Hans Prinzhorn, a former assistant at the University of Heidelberg’s psychiatric clinic. The display explores the connection between mental fragility and artistic dignity by showcasing works from the collection of psychiatric patients, a body of work that significantly influenced the development of ‘art brut’. This exhibition specifically investigates how works created by individuals in psychiatric institutions influenced modern art movements during the early 20th century, drawing inspiration from the 1922 book ‘Bildnerei der Geisteskranken’ by the German psychiatrist and art historian Hans Prinzhorn.
Another major exhibition, ‘Pre-Raphaelitism: Female Itineraries (1850-1914)’, is curated by Pamela Gerrish Nunn and organized alongside La Piscine de Roubaix. Featuring approximately 130 works—including paintings, watercolors, engravings, and ceramics—from 65 public and private collections such as the British Museum and the Musée d'Orsay, the show argues that women were essential drivers of the movement rather than merely secondary models.
Additionally, the foundation is presenting a comprehensive European retrospective of American photographer Minor White, which traces his chronological production through four sections focused on nature, landscape, and portraiture.
