Fundación Mapfre launches three new art exhibitions in Madrid
Fundación Mapfre has launched three new exhibitions in Madrid, exploring diverse perspectives on 19th and 20th-century art. The exhibitions are scheduled to run from September 24 through January 10.
One major exhibition, ‘Pre-Raphaelitism: Female Itineraries (1850-1914)’, curated by Pamela Gerrish Nunn, aims to re-examine the movement by highlighting the decisive contributions of women artists. Organized alongside La Piscine de Roubaix, the show features approximately 130 works—including paintings, watercolors, engravings, and ceramics—from 65 public and private collections worldwide, such as the British Museum and the Musée d'Orsay. The exhibition argues that women were not merely secondary models but essential drivers of the movement.
Additionally, the foundation is presenting ‘The Other Side of the Avant-Garde’, which draws inspiration from Hans Prinzhorn’s 1922 book regarding the works of psychiatric patients. A third exhibition offers a comprehensive European retrospective of American photographer Minor White, tracing his chronological production through four sections that focus on nature, landscape, and portraiture.
