Funeral homes linked to fraud in Plenitud crematorium case

Two funeral service companies – Luz Divina and Protecto Deco – have been formally charged with fraud after families discovered that bodies placed in the Plenitud crematorium were never incinerated, yet urns containing alleged ashes were delivered. In separate proceedings, a judge ordered a three‑month complementary investigation for each firm and declined to impose pre‑trial detention, while the affected families continue civil actions seeking compensation.

The investigations stem from the discovery of 386 uncremated bodies at the Plenitud facility in June 2025, prompting accusations that the funeral homes deceived clients and obtained unlawful financial benefits. Representatives of the companies were identified as responsible for the alleged wrongdoing, and further lines of inquiry into additional funeral operators remain open.
