Funeral service errors prompt investigations in Argentina and Mexico

In Santa Fe, Argentina, the Municipal Cemetery has launched an administrative investigation into four employees—two supervisors and two workers—after a grave was opened by mistake. The error involved the remains of a person buried in August 2020, a grave that was not scheduled for the current exhumation process. Cemetery Director Luz Balbastro confirmed that staff detected the error, immediately returned the remains to the correct grave, and ensured they remained identified. The family became aware of the incident via social media.

In Mexico, authorities are working to establish new protocols for the funeral sector following issues at the Plenitud crematorium. Luis Carlos Tarín, head of the State Commission for Protection Against Sanitary Risks (Coespris), clarified that his agency does not handle or identify corpses, addressing what he termed a ‘false narrative.’ Officials and funeral industry representatives are meeting to unify criteria and documentation to prevent future identification errors during cremation processes.
