Capitanata healthcare crisis: 118 ambulance service cuts spark outcry
A regional reorganization of the 118 emergency-urgency service in the Capitanata area is facing intense criticism following the decision to suppress secondary ambulance stations. The cuts specifically impact strategic areas including Vieste, Vico del Gargano, Torremaggiore, Cerignola, and Manfredonia.
Regional councilor Napoleone Cera has condemned the move, alleging that temporary staff were hired to bolster services during the election period, only to have their contracts terminated now that the elections have passed. The reorganization also threatens approximately 40 workers, including rescuers and temporary staff.
In Manfredonia, the loss of a secondary station is estimated to affect roughly 2,500 annual interventions. Concerns have also been raised regarding the potential downsizing of pediatric and gynecological departments at the Tatarella Hospital in Cerignola, leading to calls for institutional mobilization to defend local healthcare rights.
