Fuzhou elderly couple faces domestic tension over financial split and surveillance

A couple in Fuzhou, China, who have been married for over 40 years, are drawing public attention due to their extreme domestic estrangement. Mr. Li and Ms. Chen, both in their 70s, have maintained complete financial independence since their arranged marriage, a practice Mr. Li views as fairness but Ms. Chen describes as a lack of marital warmth.

Tensions escalated following Ms. Chen’s stroke, during which Mr. Li proposed separate meal portions and cooking arrangements. Following an incident where Ms. Chen reportedly damaged property and expressed resentment toward her husband, Mr. Li installed eight cameras throughout the home. He stated the surveillance is intended to monitor her activities and protect himself from potential physical harm.
