Domestic dispute of elderly Fuzhou couple

An elderly couple in Fuzhou, China, has drawn public attention for maintaining an extreme ‘AA system’ marriage for over 40 years. This lifestyle is characterized by complete separation of finances, sleeping arrangements, and meals. While the husband, Mr. Li, views this independence as a fair way to manage household expenses, his wife, Ms. Chen, has expressed feelings of long-term neglect and loneliness resulting from their arranged marriage.

Domestic tensions escalated following Ms. Chen’s stroke last year, leading to further disagreements over cooking and meal arrangements. Following incidents involving property damage and volatile emotional outbursts from Ms. Chen, Mr. Li installed multiple surveillance cameras throughout their home. He stated the cameras are intended to monitor her activities and protect himself from potential physical harm.

Mediation efforts have recently been introduced to address the decades of accumulated resentment. While Ms. Chen acknowledged her inappropriate outbursts, she also noted her gratitude for Mr. Li’s care during her illness. Mr. Li has indicated a willingness to observe future interactions in hopes of improving the relationship.
