G2-class geomagnetic storm expected to hit Earth on October 11

A G2-class moderate geomagnetic storm is expected to impact Earth on Sunday, October 11, 2026. The warning was issued by the NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center following the observation of two coronal mass ejections from the Sun on October 7 and 8.

Scientists suggest that the faster plasma flow from the October 8 ejection may catch up to and merge with the previous one before reaching Earth. While initial forecasts predicted a weaker G1-class storm, updated data from NOAA indicates a potential upgrade to G2 intensity. The actual impact will depend on the speed, density, and magnetic orientation of the solar wind as it interacts with Earth's magnetosphere.

Such geomagnetic activity can cause temporary disturbances in radio communications, navigation systems, and satellite operations. An M6.7 class flare from active region 4549 on October 8 has already contributed to R2-level radio interference on the sunlit side of the planet.
