G7 agrees tougher sanctions on Russian oil and gas at Evian summit

At a summit in Évian‑les‑Bains, France, the Group of Seven announced new measures to tighten sanctions on Russia’s oil and gas sector, aiming to further cut revenue that funds the war in Ukraine. The leaders, including the United States, United Kingdom, Canada and host France, also pledged increased delivery of air‑defence systems and additional interceptors to Ukraine, and said they would consider licensing to let Kyiv boost its own weapons production. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy attended the talks and met bilaterally with U.S. President Donald Trump and French President Emmanuel Macron. Britain and Canada singled out Russia’s “ghost fleet” that circumvents export controls, as well as Russian finance and defence networks. The move follows a recent dip in Russian crude output caused by Ukrainian drone attacks and a fall in global oil prices after a U.S.–Iran ceasefire discussion.
