G7 Evian summit centers on Ukraine, Middle East and U.S. President Trump's stance

Leaders of the Group of Seven met in Evian, France, to discuss the wars in Ukraine and the Middle East, notably the conflict with Iran. The summit brought together heads of state from the United States, France, the United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, Japan and Canada, as well as representatives from Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar and Egypt.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky attended, pressing for continued defensive aid and stricter sanctions on Russia. French President Emmanuel Macron emphasized the need to rebuild consensus on supporting Kyiv and to seek a direct negotiation route between Kyiv and Moscow. The United States, under President Donald Trump, faced criticism from European partners for what he described as “weak” support for both Ukraine and the effort to counter Iran, including remarks about the Strait of Hormuz and threats to withdraw from NATO.

Security measures around the gathering were extensive, with thousands of police, soldiers and specialized units deployed in Geneva and the surrounding area. The summit also touched on broader economic topics such as relations with China, trade disputes and environmental concerns, involving leaders from Brazil, South Korea, India and Kenya.
