G7 leaders agree on tougher Russia sanctions and boost Ukraine weapons aid

Leaders of the United States, Germany, France, Britain, Italy, Japan and Canada met at the G7 summit in Evian and pledged to impose stricter sanctions on Russia because of its ongoing war in Ukraine. The communiqué said the group will consider re‑imposing oil sanctions on Moscow and will increase supplies of long‑range missiles and air‑defence ammunition to Kyiv, as well as provide energy assistance to help Ukraine cope with the coming winter.

U.S. President Donald Trump said the United States is ready to “re‑introduce sanctions on Russian oil” and met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky for the first time since late December. French President Emmanuel Macron described the summit as a “strategic awakening,” while German officials spoke of a “day of hope” for peace. Russian officials denied any plans for a direct dialogue with Kyiv.

The summit therefore marks a coordinated Western effort to tighten economic pressure on Moscow while stepping up military support for Ukraine.
