G7 Leaders Release Economic Imbalance Report and Issue Joint Geopolitical Statements

Economists presenting a report at the G7 summit in Evian‑Les‑Bains highlighted what they described as deep global economic imbalances, citing predatory competition, industrial overcapacity, under‑investment, excessive debt, deregulation, a retreat of international solidarity and weak private investment in developing countries. The report also pointed to large current‑account deficits and surpluses in China, the European Union and the United States as evidence of unbalanced growth.

In accompanying joint statements, G7 leaders addressed a wide range of issues. They reaffirmed strong support for Ukraine, pledging additional air‑defence systems, long‑range capabilities and heightened sanctions on Russia’s war economy, especially in oil and gas. The statements endorsed the US‑Iran memorandum to keep the Strait of Hormuz open for free navigation, urged Iran to remain non‑nuclear, and called for diversified energy routes. Other topics covered migration, drug trafficking, cancer research, safer digital spaces for minors, supply‑chain resilience for critical materials, and the Ebola health emergency. The collective documents underscore the G7’s intent to shape balanced, durable growth and to coordinate on geopolitical challenges across the Indo‑Pacific, Europe and the Middle East.
