G7 leaders vow harsher Russia sanctions as Trump promises to end Ukraine war

At the G7 summit in Évian‑les‑Bains, France, the leaders of the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Germany, Italy and Japan joined President Emmanuel Macron in urging tougher pressure on Moscow. They agreed to increase sanctions on Russian oil and gas revenues and to boost defensive aid for Ukraine. U.S. President Donald Trump said, “I will do everything I can to end the war in Ukraine,” and pledged full U.S. support.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky claimed he had asked for a direct meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin during the summit, but the Kremlin said no such request was received and reiterated its invitation for Zelensky to come to Russia for talks. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitri Peskov dismissed Zelensky’s statements as “megaphone diplomacy.” The summit highlighted the continued diplomatic deadlock as fighting continues on multiple fronts.
