G7 summit in Evian gathers leaders, focuses on Iran peace deal and security

The 52nd G7 summit opened in the French spa town of Évian‑les‑Bains on 15 June 2026 and will run until 17 June. French President Emmanuel Macron and First Lady Brigitte Macron welcomed the heads of the Group of Seven – the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Germany, Italy, Japan and the European Commission – alongside invited partners such as India, Brazil, Kenya, South Korea and several Middle‑Eastern states. The agenda centres on the war in Ukraine, the recent U.S.–Iran peace framework that aims to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, tensions in the Middle East, global economic imbalances, artificial‑intelligence regulation and the security of critical mineral supply chains.

Security measures are unprecedented: more than 16 000 French police, gendarmes and military personnel are deployed, including a large explosive‑ordnance‑disposal unit that will inspect up to 1 000 vehicles per day. The deployment follows violent protests in Geneva the night before the summit, where thousands of demonstrators clashed with police. High‑profile attendees include U.S. President Donald Trump, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and AI leaders Sam Altman (OpenAI) and Dario Amodei (Anthropic) for a special briefing on child safety online.

The summit aims to produce common statements on Ukraine, Iran, economic stability and digital governance, while also addressing the broader challenge of mineral dependence for renewable‑energy technologies and semiconductors.
