France hosts G7 summit as Ukraine and Iran wars dominate agenda
The Group of Seven (G7) will meet in Evian‑les‑Bains, France, from 15 to 17 June 2026 under the French presidency. Leaders of the United States, France, the United Kingdom, Germany, Japan, Canada and Italy, together with the European Union, will gather to discuss pressing global challenges.
Key agenda items include the wars in Ukraine and Iran. The summit is expected to address the stalled peace process in Ukraine, possible negotiations involving President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and the heightened tension in the Gulf over the Strait of Hormuz. U.S. President Donald Trump’s unpredictable stance is a focal point, with European leaders seeking to persuade him to adopt a tougher position on Iran and to maintain strong support for Ukraine.
Security concerns are high. Geneva has reinforced borders and shop fronts with barriers in anticipation of violent protests, recalling the 2003 disturbances when Evian‑les‑Bains hosted the former G8. Protesters are also expected in Evian itself, prompting extensive police preparations.
Economic discussions will cover global imbalances, energy security, inflation, and the supply of critical minerals, noting China’s outsized trade surplus despite not being a G7 member.
