G7 Summit in France Confronts Trump, Iran, Ukraine Tensions

Leaders of the Group of Seven gathered in Evian‑les‑Bains, France, from June 15‑17 to address a range of crises as the United States under former President Donald Trump sought to repair strained ties with its allies. The agenda centred on the wars in the Middle East and Ukraine, with France tailoring discussions to accommodate Trump’s preferences and schedule.

Diplomats said the summit would focus on crisis management rather than breakthrough decisions. Key topics included a fragile U.S.–Iran cease‑fire and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, Ukraine’s request for renewed European support, and broader economic issues such as global imbalances and sourcing critical minerals outside China. While French officials dropped a sweeping communique, they aimed for narrower joint statements on critical minerals, migration and drug trafficking, hoping to signal unity despite underlying tensions.

The gathering also featured invitations to regional partners such as Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, as well as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, underscoring the G7’s attempt to balance security concerns with economic cooperation in a rapidly shifting geopolitical landscape.
