G7 summit in France focuses on Iran cease‑fire and Strait of Hormuz security

The Group of Seven leaders opened their summit in Évian‑les‑Bains, France on 15 June, running through 17 June. The meeting was convened hours after the United States and Iran announced a memorandum of understanding to end their fighting, prompting the G7 to address the cease‑fire and its implications.

U.S. President Donald Trump attended, meeting French President Emmanuel Macron, who said a carrier could be dispatched to the Strait of Hormuz within two to three days if requested. The agenda covered securing navigation through the Strait, mitigating impacts on global energy supplies, the ongoing war in Ukraine, worldwide economic imbalances and the sourcing of critical minerals.

Leaders from Qatar, the United Arab Emirates and Egypt joined the talks to discuss Middle‑East stability. While the United States and European members agreed on the need for a unified response, differences emerged over the handling of Iran and Ukraine aid. The summit also invited Brazil, India, Kenya and South Korea to participate in selected discussions.
