Trump heads to G7 summit in France after announcing US‑Iran peace deal and Strait of Hormuz reopening

President Donald Trump announced a U.S.–Iran peace agreement on June 14, describing it as a memorandum of understanding that will end the 31‑week conflict and allow the Strait of Hormuz to be reopened for commercial shipping. The formal signing is scheduled for Friday in Geneva, with Vice President JD Vance attending on the U.S. side.

Trump arrived in Evian‑les‑Bains, France, for the 52nd G7 summit, hosted by President Emmanuel Macron. The summit’s agenda is dominated by the new Iran deal, the reopening and de‑mining of the Strait of Hormuz, and the ongoing war in Ukraine. Leaders invited to the summit include Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, as well as representatives from Egypt, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates.

European allies such as France and the United Kingdom have pledged to assist with mine‑clearing operations in the strait, and France said its carrier Charles de Gaulle could be deployed within days. The G7 leaders issued a joint statement praising the Iran agreement as a “diplomatic breakthrough” and pledged to support its rapid implementation while continuing to discuss aid to Ukraine.
