G7 Évian summit pledges new sanctions on Russia and boosts Ukraine aid
At the G7 summit in Évian‑les‑Bains, leaders of the United States, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, Canada, Japan and the European Union announced a package of tighter sanctions on Russia, targeting its oil, gas and defence‑supply chains. They also committed to expand the delivery of weapons and air‑defence systems to Ukraine and to provide additional winter assistance.
French President Emmanuel Macron called the meeting a “deep turning point” and an “Évian moment”, saying it showed renewed US‑EU cooperation in defending Ukraine’s territorial integrity. EU officials also reported short diplomatic contacts with Moscow, though no substantive negotiations took place.
Russian state‑aligned media reacted with harsh criticism, dubbing the summit a “meeting of losers” and launching propaganda attacks against former US President Donald Trump, whom they described as a “clown”.
