GAA to trial experimental rules through tournament revival and league changes

The GAA is planning to revive an interprovincial tournament for hurling, which will serve as a testing ground for experimental rules. The initiative aims to increase player engagement, foster talent, and modernize the sport through innovations such as potential changes to scoring, game duration, or the use of technology to assist referees.

In a related development, the GAA’s Expert Advisory Committee (EAC), led by Kevin McStay, has unveiled proposed rule changes to be trialed in the Higher Education Leagues this autumn. These experimental tweaks include a ban on certain hand-passed points to encourage kicking, a basketball-style rule preventing players from passing the ball back into their own half once they have entered the attacking half, and limits on consecutive fist passes.
