GAA Gaelic football rule change trials

Overview

The Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) is preparing to trial several rule changes in Gaelic football to improve the sport’s dynamism and spectator experience. Led by the Expert Advisory Group (EAG) chaired by Kevin McStay, these proposals aim to address issues such as slow attacks and excessive lateral play.

Key proposed changes include increasing the value of a goal from three to four points, limiting teams to three consecutive handpasses before a kick is required, and banning most fisted points unless the ball is in flight. Other measures under consideration involve increasing the number of substitutes from five to six, shortening the required distance for kickouts to 13 metres, and implementing a backcourt rule to prevent teams from taking the ball back over their own halfway line.

Trials for these rules are expected to take place during the third-level Ryan Cup and Division One league. The EAG will monitor the impact of these experiments to determine if they should be permanently adopted for the 2027 season.
