Gabon considers electoral reforms following voting irregularities

Gabon is evaluating its electoral system following reports of irregularities during the legislative and local elections held on September 27, 2025. The Autorité de contrôle des élections et du référendum (ACER) reported various malfunctions, including issues with the opening of polling stations, ballot availability, and the management of proxies.

In response to these findings, ACER has requested corrective measures and the re-run of votes in certain constituencies. Government Vice-President Hermann Immongault has also suggested a complete overhaul of the electoral file and the potential introduction of mandatory voting laws. Discussions are ongoing regarding the legal framework and the effectiveness of current oversight mechanisms to restore public confidence in the suffrage process.
